Post Sun-Saviors - A Guide To Your After-Sun Skincare

We’ve all been there. Even with an adequate amount of sunscreen, proper reapplication, a hat, sunglasses, and an umbrella, sometimes our delicate skin is no match for the summer sun — and now, we’re on the hunt for any quick remedies to soothe skin that has gotten *a little* too much sun exposure.

With temperatures rising (this past June was the hottest month on record in the United States), the sun — and it’s potential harm on our skin, even with the use of essential sunscreen (we recommend zinc oxide based formulas) — has become almost unavoidable. BUT we are here to break down the products and tips to soothe skin that’s in need of a cool down, pronto.

The initial experience when dealing with a burn is usually the sensation of heat that may feel uncomfortable and painful. Reaching for cooling products to reduce heat and inflammation in the skin is key to relieving that sensation and promoting a speedy recovery. With a bad sunburn we recommend keeping it first simple and applying the gel of fresh aloe vera leaf to the area. For mild burns, or burns on their way to recovery our Absolute Purity Toner is a great remedy, with concentrated Organic Olive Leaf Extract to help soothe. Olive Leaf has been used for centuries to treat wounds and skin diseases, and has proven to be incredibly healing and protective, making it very handy for treating a mild burn. Simply splash a pump or two of the Absolute Purity Toner onto the affected area and pat into skin.

Another quick fix is the Resculpting Neck & Body Serum, our multi-purpose hydrator is perfect for anywhere that needs immediate lifting and tightening (even the face!). This serum features powerful soothing properties thanks to Oat Kernel Extract and Oarweed Extract (a potent anti-inflammatory sea kelp native to the Atlantic). Applying the Resculpting Neck & Body Serum on damp skin (dampened by the Absolute Purity Toner) will lock in much-needed moisture and help the anti-inflammatory ingredients penetrate the affected skin more efficiently.

After taking down the initial heat of a burn and treating the affected area with all the anti-inflammatory goodness you can gather, it’s time to protect protect protect. Cover the affected skin with loose-fitting clothing and try your best to stay out of direct sunlight (we know it’s easier said than done). When reaching for skincare, opt for products that deeply moisturize the skin and protect from environmental damage. Our Face Resculpting Cream is packed with Organic Rosehip Oil to promote skin healing, and other antioxidant-rich plant oils (Black Currant Seed, Pumpkin Seed, Jojoba Oils) that help guard skin from free radicals like UV exposure and pollution.

UV exposure, even in small increments over time, can cause skin to develop discoloration, emphasize scarring or hyperpigmentation, and leave sun spots on frequently exposed areas of skin. The upside is that our best-selling, Allure Best of Beauty Award-winning, Harper’s Bazaar Anti-Aging Award-winning Enzyme Exfoliant is made to address just that. With a blend of exfoliating AHA/BHAs, fruit enzymes, volcanic minerals, and Kojic Acid, the Enzyme Exfoliant is the weekly mask to help brighten sun-induced pigmentation quickly and effectively. Simply leave on for 15 minutes or spot treat specific marks overnight for a smoother, more even-toned complexion.

Of course, the most important tip is to apply (and reapply) sunscreen (again we recommend zinc oxide based clean sunscreens) whenever possible. Especially when dealing with a burn, giving your skin that extra insurance policy will allow the healing process to take place and protect all the great skincare work you’ve done thus far. Also remember to eat a lot of berries and other antioxidant rich fruit as attaining your best skin is an Inside and Outside project. Now safely go enjoy a day at the beach!
