With autumn in full swing, it’s time to step up the skincare routine. Transitioning from the warm summer months to cooler temps can take quite a toll on skin (dryness! dullness! the list goes on and on). Luckily, there are some key steps you can take to maintain a healthy glow, and just in time, we’ve caught up with renowned facialist Tracie Martyn and her husband and business partner, skin nutritionist Marius Morariu at their penthouse salon on Fifth Avenue, for tips on how to get through the season with your best face forward.
Upon entering the salon, there’s an instant calming ambiance. The interior, designed by Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz, is decked out with sparkling chandeliers, Swarovski crystals on the white walls, orchids and touches of their signature purple color throughout the space, including on the shelves, where Tracie Martyn’s namesake cult skincare line is stored. “The products make a difference immediately. That’s the beauty of the line: it’s for brightening, tightening and firming. It does everything it says it does,” says Lourdes Morales, beauty expert and business manager for Tracie Martyn at Bergdorf Goodman, where the goods are also sold.
British-born Martyn started off as a makeup artist in New York working with top photographers and models in fashion industry before collaborating with Morariu, who spent years studying nutrition. “I knew a little bit about beauty from my native country, Romania. I’m from Transylvania, where there’s a strong tradition in terms of herbal remedies there,” said Morariu. “But really I was excited about the field when Tracie shared her vision of wanting to create a healthy canvas on her clients’ skin before they apply makeup to enhance their beauty instead of concealing their imperfections.” The dynamic duo then created their Resculptor machine together then formed their line of skincare products and eventually created a business.
Now, Martyn and Morariu have been working together for two decades and have gained an impressive following, from Diane von Furstenberg to Kate Winslet and Riccardo Tisci, to name a few who visit regularly. Martyn has gained a reputation for her incredible Resculpting Facials, in addition to a number of services that benefit everyone of any age, both on and off the red carpet. With years of experience, she has picked up a number of tips from the trade. Here, Martyn shares her expertise when it comes to autumn skincare.
The transition of seasons affect everyone’s skin differently. Some may feel no change at all, while others may experience dryness and sensitivity. No matter the case, you need to keep hydrated. “It’s really important to use a humidifier when the heating goes on as it can really dry out your skin,” says Martyn. “It’s also helpful to get a facial every month to help get rid of dull, dead skin.”
Maintain a healthy skincare routine
It takes consistency to see a difference, and treating your skin on the daily will help with gradual results. Martyn notes, “I always start with our Amla Purifying Cleanser, which has ingredients including Vitamin C and salicylic acid. It really brightens up the face. The next step is to use moisturizer and sunscreen, no matter the season.” Although the sunlight often seems low during the autumn months, you may not realize that the UV index may still be high.
Consume a balanced diet
You are what you eat. Consuming a balanced diet will leave you feeling more refreshed, and it will show on your face and in your mood! Tracie recommends salmon, which contains astaxanthin (a carotenoid that improves skin elasticity) and avocados, which includes a great source of biotin to prevent dry skin, brittle hair and nails. She also suggests adding a little olive oil or black currant oil to your food, which are packed with anti-aging antioxidants. Hello, beautiful skin!
